Barrington Countryside FPD signs staffing agreement

From the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District website:

The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) has officially entered into a partnership with Paramedic Services of Illinois (PSI), based in Schiller Park, to provide 33 full-time firefighter/paramedics when the district begins its independent operations on January 1, 2014. This agreement was signed by the district’s trustees during a special meeting on September 5, marking a major step forward for the new fire protection district.

With the contract now in place, Fire Chief and Administrator Jeff Swanson is working closely with PSI to staff both the Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington stations. The trustees are also exploring options to add more part-time personnel to further bolster the department’s capacity.

Hiring is expected to start in October, with training and orientation beginning in early November. All firefighters and paramedics will be employed by PSI but will operate under the direct supervision of Chief Swanson. This arrangement ensures seamless leadership and continuity for the new department.

As part of the agreement, PSI will hire any current Barrington village firefighters who may be laid off in December, giving them the chance to continue their careers within the BCFPD. However, the district has been waiting for the village to release the names of those affected, which has made planning more challenging for both the district and the employees involved.

“We hope the village will release the names as soon as possible so these firefighters can apply for positions with the district,” said Chief Swanson. “They’ll receive the same salary and benefits they had as village employees, and there will be opportunities for advancement into officer roles.”

In addition to the staffing agreement, the BCFPD received strong support from local officials across the communities it serves. A letter of endorsement came from representatives of Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, North Barrington, South Barrington, Barrington, Cuba Township, and Lake County—nearly every jurisdiction that the district covers.

The letter praised the decision to move forward with the PSI contract, stating it would ensure “well-qualified, experienced personnel” remain available to serve all residents, including those who might be impacted by the village’s reduction in force.

Now that the staffing agreement is finalized, the next step for the BCFPD trustees is to determine a date for dividing the shared apparatus and equipment between the district and the village of Barrington. Depending on how this division goes, the board may also consider purchasing additional equipment to better meet the needs of the community.
