From the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District website:
The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) trustees officially signed a contract with Paramedic Services of Illinois (PSI), a local provider based in Schiller Park, to supply 33 full-time firefighter/paramedics when the district begins its independent operations on January 1, 2014. The agreement was approved during a special meeting on September 5, allowing Fire Chief and Administrator Jeff Swanson to begin coordinating with PSI to staff both the Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington stations.
In addition to the full-time positions, the trustees are exploring options to hire part-time personnel through PSI to further enhance staffing levels. Recruitment is expected to start in October, with training and orientation scheduled for early November. All firefighters and paramedics will be employed by PSI but will report directly to Chief Swanson, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of service.
As part of the agreement, PSI will also offer employment to current Barrington firefighters who may be affected by the village’s upcoming layoffs in December. This initiative aims to retain experienced personnel and provide them with stable employment within the new district structure.
Trustees had previously delayed the contract signing due to the village’s failure to release the names of the firefighters who will be laid off. Without this information, both the district and the affected employees face uncertainty in planning their next steps. Chief Swanson has expressed hope that the village will share the names soon, giving the firefighters enough time to apply for available positions with the BCFPD.
Firefighters hired under the new arrangement will enjoy the same salary and benefits as they did as village employees, including paid time off. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to advance into leadership roles within the district's fire department.
The decision to partner with PSI has received strong support from local officials across the communities served by the BCFPD. A letter of support was sent by representatives from Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, North Barrington, South Barrington, Barrington, Cuba Township, and Lake County. The letter praised the trustees’ decision, stating that it ensures “well-qualified, experienced personnel—especially those who may be separated from the village of Barrington—will continue to serve the residents of the District.â€
With the staffing agreement finalized, the BCFPD trustees are now focusing on scheduling the division of shared equipment and apparatus between the district and the village of Barrington. Depending on how the equipment is distributed, the board may also consider purchasing additional resources to ensure the district is fully equipped to meet the needs of its residents.
