Lake Forest firefighters responded to a residential fire at 81 W. North Avenue on Thursday, February 23, 2017, after reports of smoke coming from the basement of a home undergoing renovations. Upon arrival, thick black smoke was visible, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a Code 4 due to the active fire.
As the situation worsened and parts of the first floor became unstable, the alarm was escalated to a Box Alarm. Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control, and shortly after, the incident commander began coordinating the release of units.
Photos from the scene, captured by Larry Shapiro, show the aftermath of the fire, including damaged property, emergency vehicles, and fire trucks stationed at the location. Additional images feature various fire department units from surrounding areas, highlighting the collaborative effort during the response.
Steve Redick, a local photographer, shared his experience from the scene: "I happened to be in the area, which is quite different from my usual coverage. The fire was already under control, but I managed to capture several unique fire apparatus that I rarely see."
The photos include shots of Lincolnshire-Riverwoods FPD Truck 51, Lake Bluff FD fire engines, Countryside FPD tower ladder, Deerfield-Bannockburn FPD Squad 19, and many others. One image even features a bulldog mascot on a fire truck, adding a memorable touch to the day’s events.
