Here are some key details from the City of Evanston:
EVANSTON, IL – On Thursday, March 10, at around noon, local firefighters were called to 1516 Brummel Street after reports of smoke coming from a home.
Upon arrival, crews found heavy black smoke coming from the basement of a single-family residence. The fire was intense on the lower level, prompting an immediate upgrade to a Box Alarm. Firefighters from neighboring departments joined in to help control the blaze.
The homeowners discovered the fire when they returned home and saw smoke coming from their house. Before emergency responders arrived, one of the property owners—a man in his 80s—entered the building to check for the source of the smoke. When firefighters arrived, they quickly rescued him from the bottom of the basement stairs. He was given immediate medical attention and taken to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away.
Family members were notified, and support services were provided by the Evanston Fire Department Chaplain Monte Dillard and the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, it's reported that smoke detectors were working properly at the time. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, it's crucial to test smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries at least once or twice a year. If a smoke or carbon monoxide detector goes off, residents should leave the building immediately and call 911.
