With the rapid growth of the global paint industry, new technologies and innovative products are continuously emerging, intensifying market competition. The international architectural coatings sector is currently witnessing three major development trends. Firstly, there is a growing shift toward waterborne coatings as the industry moves to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Traditional solvent-based paints are gradually losing ground, while water-based paints are gaining momentum. However, low-grade polyvinyl alcohol-based coatings still dominate the market. Improving the quality and developing advanced waterborne coatings are essential for their long-term success. Research should focus on vinyl acetate-acrylic copolymer emulsions, styrene-acrylic copolymer emulsions, and pure acrylic latex paints, aiming for better durability, smoothness, fullness, and decorative properties. For more mature systems like epoxy emulsions and waterborne polyurethanes, further research into high-performance aqueous coatings is needed to meet specialized requirements. Secondly, functional coatings are expanding beyond basic features such as fire resistance, anti-virus, pest control, and thermal insulation. There is a need to address more complex challenges in architectural decoration through advanced compounding technologies that enhance functionality and solve new issues. Thirdly, the integration of multiple functions is becoming increasingly important. For instance, combining elasticity with breathability by using elastic emulsions and hydrophilic-modified microshells can improve both flexibility and moisture permeability. Similarly, integrating elasticity with low-pollution properties through room-temperature reaction-type emulsions and cross-linked latex can enhance performance without compromising environmental standards. Efforts should also be directed toward improving acid rain-resistant coatings to combat building corrosion caused by increasing acid rain. Breakthroughs in base compound technology and additive compatibility are crucial to addressing this growing problem. As an ideal coating, it should not only protect and beautify the surface but also provide additional unique features. Advanced materials like fluororesin coatings have already demonstrated excellent weather resistance and value-added performance in construction. The development of waterborne fluorocarbon resins, particularly fluoroethylene-based polymer-modified emulsions, is key to creating high-quality, affordable base materials that support the growth of premium architectural coatings. Waterborne polyurethane coatings, known for their superior performance, are also gaining attention due to their eco-friendly nature and ability to maintain original characteristics. Additionally, silicone-modified acrylic coatings are becoming a significant trend in China’s architectural coatings market, thanks to their excellent weathering, stain, and chemical resistance. Their non-toxic and safe properties also make powder coatings a promising direction for high-end architectural finishes.
