Robotic EV charger will get a test at Texas airport

A robotic EV charger is set to be tested at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in the coming months as part of an innovative pilot program aimed at exploring new charging solutions. This initiative highlights DFW's commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology and improving the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience for travelers. Developed by EV Charge Safe, the robot charger, named Ziggy, autonomously navigates to vehicles in need of charging, connects to the charging port, and then returns to a designated staging area to recharge itself. In addition to its primary function, Ziggy can also serve as a mobile advertising platform, offering a unique revenue stream for operators. The airport has announced that mobile robotic charging will be one of five public demonstrations taking place in parking lots between May and August. While other demos will focus on apps and on-demand charging, details about when these technologies might become widely available are not yet clear. According to EV Charge Safe, the key advantage of mobile charging robots like Ziggy is their ability to convert any parking space into a charging station. This flexibility could help address common issues such as "ICEing"—when internal combustion engine vehicles block EV charging spots. By making charging more accessible and efficient, such systems could significantly improve the EV user experience. Ziggy has already gained recognition, winning a pilot-project competition in Barcelona due to its innovative and flexible approach. The company also offers traditional Level 2 AC and DC fast chargers for commercial use, showing a well-rounded approach to EV infrastructure. Other companies are also exploring robotic charging solutions. For example, automotive supplier Continental has developed a robot that uses a physical connection to charge vehicles, while Stellantis, in collaboration with EFI Automotive, is working on a wireless charging robot. Although still in development, this concept was showcased alongside the Ram electric pickup truck earlier this year, though no timeline for production models has been announced yet. As the demand for EVs continues to grow, innovations like Ziggy represent a promising step toward more convenient and scalable charging options. With DFW’s pilot program, the future of EV charging may be more dynamic and adaptable than ever before.
