Shortly before 0500 hrs on Sunday morning (May 22nd), a working fire was reported at 6514 S. Ellis Avenue. Engine 63 arrived first and confirmed the presence of a fire. Engine 60 took the alley route and used their deck gun to tackle the fully involved back porches, significantly reducing the exterior flames. The 5th Battalion mentioned they had a 3-story, 75x100 apartment building and asked for a still and box. A family was trapped on the third floor and was rescued using ground ladders just moments before 4-5-8 requested an EMS Plan I. Although the fire spread to the rear of several apartments, it was brought under control relatively quickly. I spent most of my time capturing the rescue efforts, so there are not many images of the firefighting from the rear in this case. I’m not sure if anyone was actually transported from the scene, but it seemed like all members of the family were in good condition. It was clear that smoke detectors were installed in the building, though it’s unclear if they were what alerted the residents to the fire.
