Tinley Park Fire Department in the news:

The TribLocal is reporting that Tinley Park may be moving toward implementing live-in staffing at its fire stations. While the idea of having firefighters on duty 24/7 might have seemed impossible when the department was founded in 1901 with just 13 volunteers, times have changed. Today, the department has grown to over 120 members and already operates with round-the-clock staffing at four stations. Currently, Station 1 and Station 4 are fully equipped for live-in arrangements. These two stations, located at 17355 S. 68th Court and 7801 W. 191st St., respectively, serve as models for the upcoming upgrades at Stations 2 and 3. Village officials are planning to modernize these two stations—located at 7825 W. 167th St. and 9191 W. 175th St.—for full-time staffing in 2013 or 2014. The proposed improvements, estimated to cost around $1 million, include expanding living and kitchen areas, creating separate sleeping and bathroom facilities for men and women, and adding more office space. Trustee Brian Maher, who leads the Public Safety Committee, said the upgrades would follow the same design used at Station 4, which currently supports a four-person shift on a 24-hour schedule. Maher noted that while the changes will bring Stations 2 and 3 up to “minimal standards,” they won’t be ideal. Still, he emphasized the need to move forward quickly. “It’s not perfect, but we want to get them ready before it becomes an issue,” he said. Meanwhile, another article from TribLocal explores the potential future of Tinley Park’s retired Seagrave aerial ladder truck, Truck No. 276. The village is considering donating the 37-year-old vehicle to a small rural community in Indiana. Specifically, the Marshall Volunteer Fire Department, located near Turkey Run State Park, has shown interest. However, there's a catch: the department must cover the insurance costs for the truck, which is essential for accessing multi-story buildings and structures in remote areas. The Public Safety Committee recently approved the donation after Assistant Fire Chief Steve Klotz stated the truck no longer serves any practical purpose for Tinley Park. Committee member Tom Staunton supported the move, saying it would be a great opportunity for a struggling community. Chairman Brian Maher explained that the village often helps smaller towns in need, citing past donations like old squad cars to Iron Mountain, Michigan. In 2002, Tinley Park donated several vehicles to Iron Mountain, which had no budget for new cars. The ladder truck, purchased in 1975, and a pumper truck, bought in 1994, were taken out of service after state regulations threatened their fire safety rating. They were replaced by newer equipment, with the pumper sold to Chicago Heights for $50,000. Village Manager Scott Niehaus suggested that scrapping the ladder truck was an option, but donating it could provide much more value than its estimated $8,000 salvage price. If approved, the village would charge a nominal fee of $1 to $10 and ensure legal protection for both parties. Fire Chief Ken Dunn was credited with finding the volunteer department in Marshall. Maher noted that the fire service is a close-knit community, where departments often support one another. He hoped Marshall could secure the necessary funds for insurance. Klotz added that the truck wouldn’t be delivered—it would be up to the volunteers to retrieve it, likely using a trailer. The vehicle has a top speed of 45 to 50 mph, making transport a bit of a challenge, but the effort could be well worth it for a small town in need.
