As the clock struck midnight, firefighters from Chicago’s 5th Battalion were already on the scene responding to a basement fire early in the morning on the 6300 block of South Evans. The crews made an initial interior attack before being ordered to evacuate the structure due to rapidly worsening conditions. At that point, the ladder truck was moved to the front of the building, and Squad 5’s Snorkel was positioned in Sector A. Using the Snorkel along with multiple hand lines, the fire was eventually brought under control. Once it was safe, crews were allowed back in to finish the mop-up. The home, a large frame residence, had been vacant for several years, which likely contributed to the intensity of the fire. It's always impressive to see how quickly the fire department responds and handles these challenging situations. Wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous 2017!
