A nyloc nut, also known as a nylon insert lock nut or elastic stop nut, is a type of locking nut that features a nylon collar inside. This nylon ring resists loosening by creating friction against the screw threads. These nuts are commonly referred to as "nylok" or "nylock." The nylon insert is slightly smaller in diameter than the screw’s major diameter, which allows it to compress and grip the threads without cutting into them. Nyloc nuts maintain their locking function up to 250°F (121°C).
There is some debate about whether nyloc nuts can be reused. Some sources, like Carroll Smith's *Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners, and Plumbing Handbook*, suggest that the nylon insert isn't damaged during installation and can be reused multiple times. However, other guidelines, such as those from the Federal Aviation Administration, allow reuse if the prevailing torque remains within specification. In critical applications, however, some authorities recommend replacing self-locking nuts after use.
