All metal type hexagon nuts and metal insert/nylon insert type hexagon lock nuts are the two main categories of prevailing torque lock nuts. These nuts use either a metal or nylon insert or an elliptical deformation on the threads to create a friction constant. All-metal prevailing torque lock nuts achieve their locking effect by distorting the nut’s threads, which bite into the mating part when tightened. However, this can damage the protective coating on both the bolt and nut, increasing the risk of corrosion and galling. Once damaged, the bolt threads cannot be restored, making all-metal lock nuts typically one-time use.
