A multi-vehicle collision involving a tractor-trailer occurred in the westbound express lanes of Palatine Road near 5:50 PM on Thursday. The incident, which took place just east of Wheeling Road, left six cars and the semi-truck scattered across the highway. Prospect Heights and Wheeling Fire Departments responded to the scene, with Prospect Heights Engine 39 being the closest unit. However, due to heavy traffic and no available shoulder, the engine could not access the highway directly. All emergency units had to use the frontage road or travel against traffic on the expressway.
Two individuals were extricated from their vehicles, and five ambulances were dispatched to assess the injured. Ultimately, only three transported patients to local hospitals, as many drivers and passengers declined on-scene treatment. Alongside the ambulances, two battalion chiefs, one fire truck, one squad, and three fire engines were also sent to the scene. Firefighters used multiple hydraulic tools to free those trapped.
The westbound lanes remained closed late into the night as investigators worked to clear the area. Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were on-site and captured several images that will be featured in separate articles.

One image highlights a driver being lifted onto a stretcher, while another shows paramedics tending to a patient. Additional photos depict the extent of the damage, including a red SUV being taken to an ambulance and the truck that caused the crash.
The accident scene was chaotic, with vehicles pushed up against the center median. Firefighters and emergency personnel worked tirelessly to manage the situation, while stranded drivers watched from the sidelines. Several images capture the aftermath, including damaged cars and fire engines blocking traffic on the opposite side of the highway.
