Multi-vehicle, multi-victim MVA in Wheeling 3-28-13

A multi-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer occurred on the westbound express lanes of Palatine Road near Wheeling Road around 5:50 PM on Thursday. Emergency crews from the Prospect Heights and Wheeling Fire Departments responded to the scene, where they found six cars and the semi-truck scattered across the express lanes just east of Wheeling Road. Prospect Heights Engine 39 was the closest unit, but traffic congestion made it impossible for them to enter the highway, as there was no shoulder available. All responding units had to use the frontage road or travel the wrong way on the expressway to reach the crash site. Two individuals were rescued from their vehicles using hydraulic tools, and five ambulances arrived at the scene to assess the injured. However, only three patients were transported to local hospitals, as many drivers and passengers declined on-site treatment. In addition to the ambulances, two battalion chiefs, one fire truck, one engine, and three additional fire engines were dispatched. The scene remained chaotic as crews worked to clear the area and assist those involved. The westbound lanes remained closed late into the night while investigators examined the crash site. Local photographers Larry Shapiro and Tim Olk were on the scene and captured several images that will be featured in separate articles. These photos show firefighters working to free victims, paramedics tending to the injured, and the extent of the damage caused by the collision. Several images highlight the efforts of first responders, including firefighters using hydraulic spreaders to open crushed vehicles and paramedics carefully lifting a patient onto a stretcher. One photo shows a driver being removed from a car, while another captures the aftermath of the crash, with multiple vehicles pushed against the center median by the impact of the tractor-trailer. The incident underscores the dangers of high-speed collisions and the critical role of emergency services in ensuring public safety. As the investigation continues, officials are urging drivers to remain cautious on the roads. More photos from the scene can be viewed in a dedicated gallery.
