Jiangnan Shipbuilding Hu Keyi: Strengthening research and development of new ship types to meet new market demands

At present, shipping companies are facing the pressure of rising operating costs. The new route changes have caused shipowners to demand new ship types, and the requirements of green environmental protection have raised new issues for ship type development. The shipbuilding industry only needs to closely address these needs. To strengthen the development of ship type, we can seize the opportunity in the ship market changes and seek survival and development. Recently, Hu Keyi, chief engineer of Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., analyzed the changes in the demand of the ship market and the ways in which shipbuilding enterprises adapt to changes and develop new ship types.

Market changes put forward higher requirements for ship type development
Hu Keyi called the need to reduce operating costs called the “traditional” demand of shipping companies. He believes that the pressure on the shipbuilding enterprises is mainly reflected in reducing the fuel cost and maintenance cost of the ship's operation, improving the operational efficiency of the ship and the performance in the wave, increasing the loading rate of the ship, reducing the unit transportation cost, and increasing the cost caused by the green environmental protection requirements. And reduce the amount of ballast water in the ship.
Hu Keyi said that the demand for environmental changes and the requirements for green environmental protection are the “new” needs of the shipping industry. Among them, the changes brought about by the operation mode include: the opening of the polar route, the expansion of the Panama Canal, the enlargement of the container ships of the Asia-Europe trunk line, the enlargement of the South American-Far East iron ore transport ship, and the development of shale gas to make the United States oil and gas The importing country has become an exporting country, and China’s increased demand for official ships due to the strengthening of maritime rights protection and the increase in demand for luxury cruise ships by the construction of China’s luxury cruise ship home ports. The requirements for environmental protection are reflected in the requirements of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on the reduction of shipping greenhouse gas emissions, the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Sediments, and The implementation of a series of regulations, such as the International Convention on the Recycling of Ship Resources and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, has placed increasing demands on shipbuilding enterprises to build energy-saving and environmentally friendly ships.

Pioneering and innovative, using technology to meet market demand
So, how should the shipbuilding community meet the above requirements? Hu Keyi, who has worked in the ship type research and development field for more than 20 years and was awarded the title of “The Master of Ship Design” by the first China Shipbuilding Engineering Society, has unique insights. Hu Keyi analyzed that low-speed navigation is an effective way to reduce the fuel cost of ship operations, while low-speed shipping includes the shipowner's voluntary speed reduction and design speed reduction. The design of the speed reduction can not only reduce energy consumption, but also improve the operational efficiency of the ship and the performance in the waves.
At the same time, in order to increase the loading rate and reduce the unit transportation cost, the shipowner's demand for ships is becoming more and more obvious. Shipbuilding companies should strengthen the research and development of large ships and help shipowners reduce operating costs under new operating modes.
It is undeniable that green environmental protection requirements also increase the shipbuilding construction costs while reducing ship emissions. In the current downturn in the shipping and shipbuilding markets, the shipbuilding industry must consider the shipowners as much as possible to minimize the cost increase brought to the shipowners by meeting the requirements of green environmental protection. There are several technical paths to consider, such as minimizing permanent ballast water, which not only reduces propulsion power, reduces emissions, but also reduces the energy required for ballast water treatment; standard Panamanian container ships increase With a boat width of 5 meters, ballast water is not required at full load.
Due to the increase in icebreakers, the number of ships passing through the Arctic route is also increasing, and the opening of the Arctic route has created a new ship type demand. Hu Keyi reminded the industry that polar ship design should consider the requirements of materials and equipment for seawater, low temperature and high latitude operations, as well as structural ice zone strengthening, two-way ice breaking capacity and polar environmental protection requirements. In addition, in the case of an icebreaker, the ice level of the polar navigation vessel can be reduced to what level, which is also a problem that should be considered by the shipbuilding enterprise during research and development. After the expansion of the Panama Canal, the container ship passing through the new Panama Canal will be raised from 5000 TEU to 13,000 TEU; the external dependence of China's iron ore is still above 60%, and China's thawing of large iron ore carriers into Chinese ports is imminent; The US shale gas development has transformed the United States from an oil and gas importing country into an exporting country, which has led to a surge in demand for liquefied gas carriers. This demand is mainly concentrated in very large gas carriers (VLGC), large ethylene vessels (LEGC), and ultra-large ethylene. The ship (VEGC) has three types of ships; dual fuel and pure gas ships have also become popular in the research and development of green ship types. Shipbuilding companies should innovate in these areas.
Hu Keyi reminded the shipbuilding industry that under the guidance of China's strategy of building a maritime power, the maritime law enforcement rescue vessels, foreign trade military vessels and military auxiliary vessels, ocean-going vessels, scientific research vessels, special transport vessels, polar survey vessels, etc. Demand will increase accordingly. Among them, law enforcement official ships have their special requirements, such as strong impact resistance, strong wind resistance, and low-intensity equipment. Shipbuilding enterprises should find the right location for research and development according to their own conditions.
"It is the unshirkable mission of shipbuilders to meet the new demands of the shipping industry. It is also an inevitable choice for the survival and development of China's shipbuilding industry. Therefore, we must attach great importance to ship type research and development, do a good job in research and development, and develop high technology content and market potential. Green ships, special-purpose ships and high-tech ships. Use technology to meet demand and technology to lead demand." Hu Keyi said.
