Renault-Nissan Alliance Partners with Daimler Deep Small Cars

Renault and Nissan will be closer together over the years, and both parties will jointly develop more models. For Daimler Benz, an important partner in recent years, Renault Nissan will also increase its cooperation.

Small cars have variables

At the Paris Motor Show, Renault Twingo and SmartFortwo made appearances on the same stage. The two vehicles were produced on the same platform. They were the result of cooperation between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Mercedes-Benz. Although the results are remarkable, Renault Nissan has doubts about the cooperation between the two sides in the field of small cars. There may be uncertainties in the future.

According to the German "Car Weekly" quoted a Renault employee revealed "whether the next generation of Twingo will continue to develop in cooperation with Daimler Benz has not yet been finalized." Instead, Renault will deepen its cooperation with Nissan, and the two companies will produce more models based on the same platform.

Currently, the two-seater SmartFortwo is produced at the company's factory in Hambach, France, and the four-seat Forfour is produced at Renault's plant in Slovenia, just like the Twingo. "We are determined to expand the strategic cooperation between Renault and Nissan," Reebok Europe's Stefan Mueller told Auto Week, "the latest example is the new Espace." In early October of this year, Renault displayed the fifth-generation Espace at the Paris Motor Show. The car is based on the Nissan CMF platform. In addition, Renault's mid-size car Laguna, which will be launched in 2015, will also be developed based on the Nissan CMF platform.

Nissan also expressed positive views on cooperation with Renault for "Car Weekly." "When we expanded cooperation with Renault in the A-Class area, this level of collaboration was high," said Nissan Europe President Paul Willcox.

In the A-Class field, if Renault Twingo does not cooperate with Smart, it may choose to co-develop with Nissan Micra. "This question needs to be taken into account when judging the next-generation Micra," said Willcox.

Cooperation continues in another dimension

Although Renault-Nissan may not continue to cooperate with Daimler-Benz in the small car sector, this does not mean that both sides should end their relationship. In other areas, the relationship between Renault-Nissan and Mercedes-Benz is as close as ever, and it can even be said that it is constantly deepening. For example, in Mexico, the two sides have decided to jointly build a factory that produces compact luxury cars. In Asia, Nissan also provided commercial vehicles with the new NV350 to its Mercedes subsidiary.

“The prospects of our cooperation projects are clear and the two parties will maintain a long-term partnership.” Renault-Nissan President Ghosn said at the start of the Paris Car Campaign: “The cooperation with Mercedes-Benz can reduce the development time of new models, and it also has long-term benefits for Renault-Nissan. Strategically positive."

From the current perspective, the cooperation between Renault-Nissan and Mercedes-Benz is actually a win-win choice. First of all, Nissan's luxury brand Infiniti has benefited from Mercedes-Benz, and Mercedes-Benz has received small engine technology from Renault-Nissan.

Since the two sides established a cooperative relationship in 2010, the number of cooperation projects between the two sides has increased from 3 to 10. "We used to be limited to synergies in the European market. Now we have turned our attention to all important markets," said Ghosn.

For Mercedes-Benz, Renault-Nissan provides small engines with high efficiency and low energy consumption. Based on this, small cars can attract more young consumers to buy Mercedes-Benz.
