According to foreign media reports, the Pennsylvania State University team of engineers has developed a self-heating battery that can be quickly charged regardless of the external temperature.
Yang Xiaoguang, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Pennsylvania State University, said: " Electric vehicles are very popular on the west coast of the United States because the climate is good there. Previously, researchers have developed a self-heating battery to avoid power consumption below freezing. Nowadays, this type of battery is also suitable for this principle, and can even be quickly charged for 15 minutes at minus 42oC (minus 45oF).
Wang Chaoyang, professor of chemical engineering, professor of materials science and engineering, and director of the Electrochemical Engine Center, said: "Our battery is unique in that it can self-heat and automatically switch to charging mode. The researchers published their battery prototype test results in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They found that self-heating batteries can withstand 4,500 15 minute charges at 32oF, with a battery capacity loss of only 20%, providing a cruising range of approximately 280,000 miles and a 12.5 year operation. A conventional battery tested under the same conditions lost 20% of the battery capacity after 50 charges.
