NPC deputies call for national legislation to ban phosphorus

“The amount of detergents in China is huge and the issue of eutrophication in water areas is outstanding. The sodium tripolyphosphate contained in detergents is a soluble phosphorus that can be absorbed and utilized by algae and other organisms.” At the just-concluded two sessions, the National People’s Congress Yang Zhen, president of Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, proposed that legislation should be stipulated as soon as possible to ban phosphorus in detergents.
Yang Zhen said that China has proposed banned phosphorus for more than 10 years, but the means are not firm. Some detergent companies are still resisting comprehensive phosphorus ban for the development of the industry. Some local governments do not attach importance to banned phosphorus. Therefore, we must strictly prohibit the production, sale, and use of phosphorus-containing detergents through national legislation. In practical operation, one or two years may be considered as a transitional period, and sales and use of various phosphorus-containing detergents must be strictly prohibited in key regions and key river basins before the country implements bans on phosphorus.
Yang Zhen suggested that the government should use economic means to regulate and control, encourage residents to use non-phosphorus detergents; modify detergent standards; encourage developed countries in the production of detergent companies in China, the production of phosphate-free detergents in their own production in China Comprehensively ban all detergents that emit sodium tripolyphosphate; regulations require all kinds of detergents to be marked with phosphorus content; deploy government departments at all levels to carry out phosphorus bans, strictly check the phosphorus-containing detergents that are mixed into the market; and prohibit industrial enterprises, Medical units use phosphorus-containing detergents.
