Since this year, China United Coalbed Methane Co., Ltd. has entered into agreements with four international companies to explore and develop coalbed methane (CBM) in the country. In addition, over a dozen foreign firms have visited China to discuss CBM production opportunities with local authorities. According to reports, the total investment in exploration and development of CBM in 26 regions where foreign energy companies are involved has surpassed RMB 1.2 billion. This information was shared by multiple sources.
CBM, often referred to as "gas," is a clean and high-calorific energy source that holds great promise for the future. Preliminary studies suggest that China's CBM resources within 2,000 meters underground range from 30 to 35 trillion cubic meters—equivalent to the country’s 38 trillion cubic meters of conventional natural gas. This makes China the third-largest holder of CBM reserves globally, after Russia and Canada. Despite its vast potential, the development of CBM has long been limited due to challenges such as poor gas permeability in coal seams, complex geological conditions, and technological constraints. However, with growing energy demand, CBM has recently gained more attention domestically. Breakthroughs in coal chemical technology, particularly those centered around CBM development, have also emerged.
At the end of last year, the successful demonstration project for high-tech CBM industrialization in Qinshui County, Jincheng City, Shanxi Province, marked a significant milestone. It signaled the beginning of large-scale domestic CBM development. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has not imposed restrictions on foreign participation in the CBM sector, and supportive policies have encouraged international investment. For example, on March 9, Canadian company Hongtu Research signed a product-sharing agreement with China National Coalbed Methane Corporation—a joint venture between PetroChina and China Coal Group focused on foreign cooperation in CBM development. This marks the fourth such agreement this year, with foreign companies now holding exploration and development rights in 26 regions across China, with investments exceeding 1.2 billion yuan, typically ranging from 50% to 70%.
The development of coalbed methane has sparked widespread interest across various sectors. During the recent Fourth Session of the 10th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), 12 proposals were submitted regarding the utilization of CBM in the coal chemical industry, particularly in Shanxi. These proposals emphasize the need for the country to make efficient and sustainable use of this valuable energy resource, ensuring it is neither wasted nor lost.
A pressure vessel is a closed container capable of withstanding internal or external gas or liquid pressure. This type of equipment is widely used in various industrial fields such as chemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, and food processing, for storing, transporting, or processing various media. According to their different purposes and design characteristics, pressure vessels can be divided into various types, such as reactors, heat exchangers, separators, etc.
Â
Â
Â
###The main components of a pressure vessel
Â
Â
Â
-Shell: The part that constitutes the main body of a pressure vessel, usually welded from steel plates.
Â
-Head: Connected at both ends of the shell, used to seal the container. Common forms include hemispherical, elliptical, and flat plate shapes.
Â
-* * Takeover * *: Installed on the shell, used to connect pipelines or other equipment to achieve input and output of media.
Â
-* * Support * *: Support the entire weight of the container and secure it to the foundation.
Â
-* * Safety attachments * *: including but not limited to safety valves, bursting disc devices, etc., used to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment during operation.

###Design and Manufacturing Standards
Â
Â
Â
In order to ensure the safe and reliable operation of pressure vessels, various countries have formulated strict design and manufacturing specifications and technical requirements. For example, in China, the design, manufacturing, installation, and use of pressure vessels need to comply with the "Regulations on Safety Supervision of Special Equipment" and relevant national standards; Internationally, a series of specifications developed by ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) are widely used.
Â
Â
Â
###Security considerations
Â
Â
Â
Due to the fact that pressure vessels often carry media under high pressure or high temperature conditions, their safety is crucial. In addition to using high-strength materials for manufacturing, regular non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, etc.) is also required to check for cracks, corrosion, and other issues. At the same time, correctly setting and maintaining safety attachments is also one of the effective measures to prevent accidents from occurring.
Â
Â
Â
In short, pressure vessels are one of the indispensable and important equipment in modern industry, but at the same time, they also have extremely high requirements for design and manufacturing due to their special working environment. Proper selection, rational use, and regular maintenance are of great significance for ensuring its long-term stable operation.
