Kunming University of Science and Technology has successfully researched and developed clean metallurgy technology for the efficient extraction of metallic indium from indium-zinc materials, and achieved significant innovation in indium production technology.

Scattered metal has been hailed as the "vitamin" of modern industry and is an indispensable important metal for the contemporary high-tech industry. Scattered metal indium is a key basic material in the high-tech fields such as energy, aerospace, electronic information and nuclear industries. Indium is used in the liquid crystal display industry and can produce more than US$100 billion in products each year. In recent years, the demand for indium has rapidly increased in the fields of global electronic information and new energy, and developed countries have included it in strategic reserve materials.

China is the country with the largest indium reserves in the world, and it is also the world's largest indium producer. Indium produces more than 60% of the world's annual output. Each year, China produces 30,000 tons of indium-zinc-containing materials from pyrometallurgical zinc, including 150 tons of indium, which accounts for more than 50% of raw indium production raw materials.

However, the traditional indium smelting process has serious problems such as large investment, high production cost, heavy environmental load, and low resource utilization, and it cannot effectively handle the indium-containing materials produced by the pyrometallurgical process, resulting in an annual loss of about 80 percent in China. Tons of metallic indium, which accounts for 25% of China's primary indium production, cannot meet the requirements of sustainable development and the construction of a resource-saving society. The development of the clean metallurgy technology for the efficient extraction of indium is imperative.

Kunming University of Science and Technology researchers have worked hard to creatively research and develop a new process for the comprehensive and efficient extraction of metallic indium from indium-zinc materials. A series of key technologies and key equipment have been formed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional indium smelting process. According to Professor Yang Bin of the School of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering of Kunming University of Science and Technology, this key technology mainly includes the vacuum distillation separation technology of indium and zinc, lead, cadmium and other elements, reducing the use of chemical reagents and achieving clean production; replacing the traditional extraction process , A method for extracting indium from smelting slag rich in metallic indium. Using this complete set of process technology, the recovery of indium containing indium and zinc materials can reach 90%, while the zinc recovery rate is greater than 90%.

It is reported that this new technology has been successfully applied to five metallurgical enterprises in Guangxi, Yunnan, and Hunan. Accumulatively producing 128 tons of metallic indium with a purity of 99.99% and a purity of 99.999% of high-purity indium 1.5. Tons, 7,730 tons of metal zinc was recovered. At present, the Yunnan Copper Hualian Zinc and Indium Corporation has adopted this technology to build a production line with an annual output of 60 tons of metal indium, and will soon establish the world's largest metal indium production base.
