Around 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 22, 2021, multiple fire departments were called to a residence on Cuba Road in Long Grove following reports of a significant fire. The home, measuring around 6,000 square feet with a cedar shake roof, is situated far from the main road with a winding driveway and wooden bridge leading to it. Initial reports suggested that the homeowner had been attempting to put out the flames on the roof themselves.
When the first responders arrived, they found the situation escalating rapidly. A dispatcher mentioned that the homeowner had briefly reentered the house but was back outside by the time the first units reached the scene. Upon conducting an initial assessment, Long Grove firefighters noticed fire not only on the roof but also extending into the attic areas at both the front and rear of the property. The fire was quickly classified as a working fire, prompting an upgrade to a full-blown MABAS Box Alarm, eventually escalating to a third alarm as more resources were needed.
Firefighters initially attempted an interior attack but were soon forced to switch to a defensive strategy due to the intensity of the blaze. Long Grove's Tanker 55, carrying 3,000 gallons of water, along with Squad 55’s 730 gallons, were positioned in the driveway. They were joined shortly by Lake Zurich Engine 324, which brought an additional 750 gallons after laying out 750 feet of 5-inch hose up the driveway.
A deck gun was deployed to combat the fire, using up the initial 4,800 gallons of water while other teams worked on establishing a water supply from the street. Tankers transported water from two fill sites, one to the east and another to the west, to sustain the firefighting efforts. At some point during the operation, there were sounds of ammunition exploding within the burning structure, and embers spreading to the east sparked several small brush fires nearby.
The wind-driven fire spread quickly, consuming the entire house. By the end, the once-massive home was completely destroyed. This incident drew personnel from numerous surrounding fire districts, including Long Grove, Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Deerfield-Riverwoods, Palatine, Barrington, Countryside, Elk Grove Village, Mundelein, Wheeling, Lake Zurich, Mount Prospect, Highland Park, Gurnee, Lake Forest, Palatine Rural, Countryside, Grayslake, Elk Grove Township, Round Lake, Cary, Lake Villa, Nunda Rural, Fox River Grove, Wauconda, and Northbrook. Their collective efforts aimed to control the situation and prevent further damage to neighboring properties.
As the sun set that evening, the community watched as the remnants of the fire continued to smolder, leaving behind only ashes where once stood a grand home. The coordinated response highlighted the dedication and teamwork of local emergency services, who worked tirelessly through the night to ensure public safety.
