Demers Ambulances, a top manufacturer of ambulance vehicles in North America, has partnered with The Lion Electric Company (NYSE: LEV) (TSX: LEV), a leader in all-electric medium and heavy-duty urban vehicles, to introduce the Demers eFX Ambulance — the first fully electric, purpose-built ambulance on the market.
Set for commercial release in the second half of 2022, this groundbreaking model was developed with support from the Quebec government and the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP). The project has been a five-year collaboration between Demers and Lion, incorporating direct feedback from paramedics and emergency medical service providers. This is the first ambulance designed specifically with input from those on the front lines.
The Lion5 chassis will be built in Saint-Jérôme by Lion, while the medical compartment and final assembly will take place at Demers' facility in Beloeil. The all-electric ambulance will be available across North America and eventually worldwide, as Demers’ vehicles are already used in 43 countries. As part of an exclusive agreement, Demers plans to deploy at least 1,500 all-electric ambulances over the next five years.
Beyond being a major step forward in the shift to greener emergency transport, the new design also focuses on improving ergonomics, safety, and efficiency for paramedics. It aims to enhance both their comfort and that of patients during transport.
This is the first ambulance to feature a custom-designed chassis specifically for emergency use. The teams at Demers and Lion completely reimagined the interior layout, focusing on functionality and usability. They've made significant changes to how the vehicle operates, especially in terms of space and movement during transit.
One of the biggest challenges paramedics face is being able to move freely while the ambulance is in motion to assist patients. Through extensive consultation with medical professionals, Demers has introduced several innovative features that will be revealed before production begins.
