Engine 61 Museum tour (more)

Al Kirchner is a retired Chief of the U.S. Marine Corps Fire Service and a lifelong fire buff, especially devoted to the Chicago Fire Departmentâ€”particularly Engine 61 and the 16th Battalion during its time when it operated out of Engine 45 under the leadership of Bill Foran and his team.

Al was a student firefighter at Notre Dame, grew up on Long Island, New York, and eventually became close friends with Commissioner Quinn.

After Notre Dame, Al worked for the Washington D.C. Fire Department, then the U.S. Fire Administration, and later served as Superintendent at the National Fire Academy.

Al has brought the memories of Chicagoâ€™s firehouses to life, especially for one of the most iconic stations in the cityâ€”Engine 61.

For those of us who were part of Engine 61, this place brings back so many great memories. For me, it was working alongside Lieutenant Pat Durkin and, in the end, Captain Keith Witt.

Interestingly, Keith Witt retired from the CFD as a chief in the 18th Battalion and now works with me at the Penn Twp Fire Department in Indiana.
