This is the first in a series of updates on the fire that broke out this morning at the Woman’s Club of Wilmette, located at 930 Greenleaf Avenue. Around 10:00 AM on February 17, 2015, local fire departments responded to an automatic fire alarm at the building.
As crews arrived on scene, smoke was already visible coming through the roof, prompting an immediate upgrade to a Code 4 — meaning it was now a working fire. Fortunately, all occupants had safely evacuated before emergency services arrived. Firefighters made an initial interior attack but were forced to withdraw due to the intensity of the flames.
To manage the situation, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm, bringing in additional units from surrounding areas. A large number of fire apparatus were deployed, including four aerial ladder trucks: Wilmette Tower 26, Northbrook Tower 12, Evanston Truck 23, and Morton Grove Quint 4. Engine companies such as Wilmette Engine 27 and Winnetka Engine 28 were also on the scene, along with support from Lincolnwood, Glenview, Northfield, Des Plaines, and Skokie.
In addition to the firefighting units, there were also medical response teams, including both Wilmette ambulances, as well as the Mess Canteen and MABAS Division 3 Communications unit. Several chief officers were present to oversee operations.
Here are some striking images captured by Larry Shapiro, who was on site along with photographers Tim Olk and Jeff Rudolph. The photos show the intense flames burning through the roof and the impressive efforts of the fire department responding to the incident.
