House fire in Mt Prospect 3-18-13

A fire occurred today around 10:30 AM at 21 S Hi Lusi Ave. Tower 13 was the first on scene and reported heavy smoke conditions, which led to a Code 4 (no Engine 13 available). There was heavy fire on the second floor of a 1-1/2 story cape cod home. As I arrived, crews initiated an evacuation due to a floor collapse on the second floor. Firefighters temporarily went defensive, brought the fire under control, and then re-entered the structure. They were unable to reach the rear of the house because most properties had high fences, but there was a large bump-out addition on the second floor at the back. The companies that auto-aided to the Code 4 level included AHTS Tower 1, DESP Engine & Battalion Chief, EGRT Engine 11, ROLM Engine, and GLVW Engine C/Q.
