Around noon today, the Palatine Fire Department received a call about a submerged car in a pond on the Harper College campus. Upon arrival, firefighters found only the roof of the vehicle visible, with the passenger door open. Firefighters quickly mobilized divers from Palatine, Hoffman Estates, and Schaumburg to search the area. Divers located a woman inside the submerged car and immediately brought her to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where she was later pronounced dead. Additional support from Elk Grove, Arlington Heights, and Mt. Prospect divers was available if needed.
According to Harper College officials, the incident occurred in a pond near Parking Lot 12. Authorities have confirmed that the victim was a single occupant, but her identity remains undisclosed. The investigation is ongoing and being conducted jointly by the Harper College Police Department, the Palatine Police Department, and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Local photographer Larry Shapiro captured several powerful images of the rescue effort, including moments of divers preparing for the search and the eventual recovery of the car. His comprehensive gallery, featuring multiple angles and detailed shots, is available online [here](http://shapirophotography.net/Rescues%202011.htm). Additionally, a video of the car being winched out of the pond has been shared widely.
The operation was thorough, with divers using specialized equipment to ensure no other victims remained in the submerged vehicle. After securing the car, it was hoisted out of the water by Redmons Towing. Each firefighter involved in the underwater search underwent a decontamination process, which included passing through a Division 1 Decon unit supplied by Palatine Engine 84.
As the community processes this tragedy, local media outlets like the Chicago Tribune and the Daily Herald have provided updates and context. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced daily by first responders and the importance of vigilance in maintaining safe environments.
I personally witnessed the scene unfold and was struck by the professionalism and coordination displayed by all agencies involved. It’s clear that teamwork played a critical role in managing this complex situation. While details continue to emerge, the focus remains on supporting those affected and ensuring justice for the victim.
