Railway Minister: South Station heat pump using new environmental technologies

As the Beijing Olympic Games draw nearer, construction of the Beijing South Railway Station has entered its final phase, marking a significant milestone in the city's infrastructure development. According to an official announcement on the website of the Chinese Ministry of Railways, Minister Liu Zhijun recently visited the site to inspect the progress and emphasized the importance of meeting world-class standards in all aspects of the station’s design and operation. During his visit, Minister Liu urged relevant departments to focus on functional layout, service quality, and interior design, ensuring that the station is fully prepared for its scheduled opening. He stressed that the station must provide efficient and reliable transportation services to support the smooth operation of the upcoming Olympics. The goal is to create a modern, user-friendly environment that reflects Beijing’s status as a global city. Liu also highlighted the need for the station’s design to be both elegant and practical, with an emphasis on integrating Beijing’s cultural identity into the overall aesthetic. He encouraged the use of advanced technologies such as solar photovoltaic power generation, combined heat and power systems, and heat pump technology to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. These innovations are expected to set a new benchmark for sustainable railway stations in China. Beijing South Railway Station is a key national project, designed under the guidelines of "functional, systematic, advanced, cultural, and economical" during the 11th Five-Year Plan period. Construction began on December 24, 2005, and after more than two years of dedicated work by the construction teams, the station is now nearing completion. It is expected to begin trial operations on June 25 and officially open for full service on August 1, just in time to support the Olympic Games. This state-of-the-art facility will not only serve as a major transportation hub but also symbolize China’s commitment to modernization, sustainability, and excellence in infrastructure.
