This report comes from Eric Haak:
At 4:24 PM on Friday, December 7th, a fire broke out in an abandoned two-story residential building with commercial space on the ground floor, located at the corner of Drake and 16th Street in Chicago. The initial response included engines 38 and 109, ladders 48 and 32, along with the 14th Battalion. Truck 26 was assigned as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) under the 13th Battalion. Just six minutes after the first units arrived, the companies transitioned to a defensive strategy after Truck 48 reported a dangerous roof condition.
At 4:35 PM, the 14th Battalion requested a still and a box alarm, followed by a 2-11 alarm nine minutes later, escalating to a 2-2-1 alarm. Squad 1 used a snorkel from a vacant lot to the southeast of the fire building, while Tower Ladder 54 set up operations in Sector 1 on 16th Street. Tower Ladder 5 was positioned on Drake Street, directly west of the fire structure.
Eric Haak captured several powerful images of the incident, showing the intense fire and the coordinated efforts of the responding units. These photos provide a rare glimpse into the chaos and professionalism displayed during this major 2-11 alarm call.
