This report comes from Eric Haak:
At 1624 hours on Friday, December 7th, a fire broke out in an abandoned two-story building at the corner of Drake and 16th Street in Chicago. The structure was a 50 x 125-foot residential building with commercial space on the first floor. Upon arrival, Engine 38 and 109, along with Truck 48 and 32, responded, supported by the 14th Battalion. Truck 26 served as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) under the 13th Battalion. Just six minutes after the first units arrived, the companies transitioned to a defensive position when Truck 48 reported a compromised roof.
By 1635 hours, the 14th Battalion called for a "still and box" operation, followed by a 2-11 alarm nine minutes later, escalating to a 2-2-1 alarm. Squad 1 used a snorkel from a vacant lot located to the southeast of the fire building. Tower Ladder 54 was deployed in Sector 1 on 16th Street, while Tower Ladder 5 operated on Drake Street, directly west of the fire scene.
Eric Haak captured several images from the scene, providing a visual record of the incident. His photos show the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding units. These images offer a rare glimpse into the chaotic yet coordinated response during the 2-11 alarm. Each photo highlights different aspects of the operation, from the flames engulfing the building to the firefighters working in challenging conditions.
