Fatal fire in Naperville, 12-18-13

The Chicago Tribune reported on a tragic house fire that occurred this morning in Naperville, resulting in two fatalities and three injuries. According to fire officials, the incident took place at a two-story home located on the 1200 block of Field Court. A neighbor called 911 around 6:50 a.m., reporting flames coming from the residence. Bureau Chief Mark Thurow confirmed the details of the incident. Firefighters arrived on the scene and quickly realized the severity of the situation. They managed to rescue a 21-year-old man who was taken to Edward Hospital in critical condition. Two other individuals, an 84-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, were also hospitalized, though their injuries are not considered life-threatening. Sean Burke, a resident of Field Court, described waking up to the sound of emergency vehicles. At first, he saw small flames, but within 15 minutes, the fire had grown significantly. “The blaze really took off and got really large,” he said. He heard firefighters discussing over their radios that people were trapped upstairs. He also noticed several ambulances on the scene, which weren’t transporting anyone at the time. About 10 minutes after arriving, firefighters were forced to evacuate the home due to the risk of structural collapse, according to Thurow. Two occupants, a 57-year-old man and his 56-year-old wife, were initially missing. When it became safe for firefighters to re-enter, they discovered that the second floor had collapsed, and two bodies were found in the basement.
