Funeral for Retired Downers Grove Lieutenant John D Schultz – December 7, 2019

John D. Schultz, known affectionately as “Buddha” or “Schultzy,” passed away suddenly on December 1, 2019, at the age of 49, surrounded by his loving family at Delnor Hospital. Born on September 15, 1970, in St. Charles, John was the beloved son of John Sr. and Nancy (DeVries) Schultz. John spent much of his life serving others, first as a dedicated firefighter for the Geneva Fire Department, then for Downers Grove, and finally at Carol Stream. He was a man of many passions—pro and college football were his greatest loves, and he could often be found immersed in history books or glued to the screen watching reruns of classic shows like *ME-TV*. But nothing brought him greater joy than being with his family. John leaves behind his children, Mia, Ian, and Owen, along with their mother, Becky (Niemiec) Schultz. He is also survived by his sister Barbara (Tim) Estes of Bristol and her daughter, Lindsey Wojcik of Earlville, as well as numerous cherished relatives and friends. John’s contributions to firefighting went far beyond the call of duty. At Downers Grove, he served as a Lieutenant and was actively involved with the Downers Grove Professional Firefighters Local 3234 from 2000 to 2013. He held leadership roles such as the Union Executive Board and Negotiations Committee and proudly represented his fellow firefighters as part of the Honor Guard for the AFFI. John’s commitment to improving his department was unwavering—he excelled in EMS, acting as both the Designated Infection Control Officer and EMS Coordinator during his tenure. Before joining Downers Grove, John spent six years at Carol Stream and over two decades at Geneva, where he began his illustrious firefighting career. In addition to his firefighting duties, John was an esteemed instructor at the Downers Grove Fire Academy, Romeoville Fire Academy, and even taught at the College of DuPage. His passion for teaching and mentoring younger generations of firefighters left a lasting impact on countless individuals. Today, John’s family faces not only the heartbreak of losing such a devoted father but also the daunting financial burden of honoring his legacy through a proper funeral. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support them during this difficult time. As we mourn the loss of this remarkable man, let us remember John not just for his professional achievements but for the warmth, kindness, and humor he brought into everyone's lives. A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 11:00 am at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church. Please consider donating to help ease some of the weight off John’s family during this unimaginable loss. Your generosity can make all the difference in ensuring that John’s final farewell is filled with dignity and love.
