It's hard to put into words how much we've lost with John's passing. I remember the first time we met—it was at a fire station in Geneva, back when he was just starting out. Little did I know then that this guy would go on to become such an incredible firefighter, mentor, and friend.
John was more than just a lieutenant; he was a leader who always put others first. Whether it was during his 24 years with the Geneva Fire Department or later at Downers Grove, he brought passion and dedication to everything he did. At Downers Grove, he served as EMS coordinator and infection control officer—roles where his attention to detail and care for others really shone through. And let’s not forget how involved he was with the union, especially as part of the negotiating team and honor guard. He believed strongly in giving back to the profession and making life better for everyone around him.
But beyond his work, John was just one of those people you couldn’t help but love. A devoted dad to Mia, Ian, and Owen, he spent countless hours cheering them on at soccer games and teaching them about life. Football fans knew him as "Schultzy," and anyone who met him quickly learned why—he had a way of lighting up any room with his humor and warmth. Star Wars? History? Old reruns of classic TV shows? He loved it all, but nothing made him happier than being surrounded by his family.
Now, his kids are left without their rock, and his wife and friends are left with an unbearable void. The costs associated with his final days and the funeral weigh heavy on his family, and they’re struggling to keep their heads above water. If there’s anything we can do to ease their burden, it’s important that we step up.
