Schaumburg firefighter loses battle with cancer

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

Mike Solberg, a 34-year-old firefighter from Schaumburg, passed away on Friday after a courageous 3½-year battle with brain cancer. His journey was marked by strength, resilience, and an unwavering spirit.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the loss of one of our own, Mike Solberg,” said the Schaumburg Professional Firefighters Association in a heartfelt post on Facebook. “He fought until the very end, living every moment to the fullest. He was a true hero, not just in his profession, but in life itself. Our deepest condolences go out to Mike and his family during this difficult time.”

Schaumburg Fire Chief David Schumann expressed the department’s grief, stating that they are mourning the loss of a friend and colleague. “Losing someone like Mike is never easy,” he said. “But firefighters are strong, and we will carry his memory with us as we move forward.”

Mike, who lived in Park Ridge and was the son of Palatine Councilman Greg Solberg, joined the Schaumburg Fire Department on October 12, 2012. Just two weeks later, he began experiencing severe headaches that led to a hospital visit. A CT scan and MRI revealed a large brain tumor, the size of an orange.

Within days, he underwent surgery to remove a grade IV glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. Though the cancer went into remission and he returned to full duty, it came back in June of last year, forcing him onto light duty while he worked through rehab for physical and occupational therapy.

In December, his colleagues and friends held a benefit event at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine to support Mike and his family, showing the deep bond and care within the fire department community.

Mike is survived by his wife, Maureen, their young daughter Emma, his parents, a brother, two sisters, and many extended family members. His legacy will live on through them and the countless lives he touched.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at Cumberland Chapels, located at 8300 W. Lawrence Ave. in Norridge. Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, followed by Mass at St. Eugene Church, 7598 W. Foster Ave. in Chicago, at 10 a.m. The service will conclude with interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S. Wolf Road in Hillside.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Schaumburg Firefighters’ Fighting Cancer Pink Tie Ball, which Mike supported so passionately. You can contribute online at pinktieball4092.com or mail checks to 950 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL 60194.

Thanks, Paul
