Schaumburg firefighter loses battle with cancer

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Schaumburg firefighter Mike Solberg, 34, passed away on Friday after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. His journey began in 2012 when he joined the Schaumburg Fire Department, only to face an unexpected health challenge just weeks later.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our own, Mike Solberg,” shared the Schaumburg Professional Firefighters Association on Facebook. “Mike fought until the end and lived every minute to the fullest. He was not only courageous but also an inspiration to all of us. Our deepest condolences go out to him and his family during this difficult time.”

Schaumburg Fire Chief David Schumann expressed the department’s grief, stating that firefighter honors will be part of Solberg’s funeral. “Losing a fellow firefighter and friend is always heartbreaking,” he said. “But we are resilient, and we will get through this together.”

Mike, a resident of Park Ridge and son of Palatine Councilman Greg Solberg, was diagnosed with a large brain tumor shortly after joining the department. He underwent surgery to remove a grade IV glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer. Though he initially went into remission and returned to full duty, the cancer returned in June, forcing him onto light duty and into rehab for physical and occupational therapy.

Throughout his battle, Mike remained a source of strength and positivity. In December, his colleagues held a benefit event at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine to support him and his family, showing the deep bond within the fire department.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen, their young daughter Emma, his parents, a brother, two sisters, and many extended family members. His legacy will live on through the work of the Schaumburg Firefighters’ Fighting Cancer Pink Tie Ball, which he supported so passionately.

Visitation will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at Cumberland Chapels, 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge. The funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday, followed by Mass at St. Eugene Church in Chicago at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Schaumburg Firefighters’ Fighting Cancer Pink Tie Ball at 950 W. Schaumburg Road or online at pinktieball4092.com.

Thanks, Paul
