The Barrington Fire Department received a call around 9:30 PM on Wednesday from residents reporting a fire in the garage of their home at 23170 N. Church. Upon arrival, Barrington Engine 363 found a fully involved garage fire that had already spread into the house. Shortly after, Lake Zurich Engine 2 made a U-turn in the dead-end cul-de-sac and laid 400 feet of 5-inch supply line to the end of the street. A Barrington tanker dropped its portable tank, establishing a water supply as crews advanced two lines through separate doors of the house.
The structure was built on a hill, with one story in the front and two stories on the side, making access challenging. As the fire grew, Barrington requested a MABAS Box Alarm, bringing in additional resources such as tankers from Wauconda, Fox River Grove, and East Dundee, along with Palatine Truck 85 and engines from Hoffman Estates, Palatine Rural, and Carpentersville. Rolling Meadows provided backup for a company that couldn't respond with an ambulance, while Cary Squad 255 set up a light tower for scene illumination.
Barrington Engine 3 remained in the cul-de-sac, supplying three total lines. Firefighters from Carpentersville worked to knock down hot spots in the completely destroyed garage. The extensive damage to the rear of the house wasn’t visible from the street, and Cary firefighters continued mop-up efforts along the garage foundation. A firefighter’s silhouette could be seen in the thick smoke, highlighting the intensity of the blaze.
The family dog did not survive, but all residents escaped safely. The Box Alarm was canceled shortly after 10:30 PM. Larry Shapiro arrived after the fire was under control and captured these images, which provide a powerful visual record of the event. More photos can be viewed HERE.
