Lake County Indiana Snorkel History

This is a post from Wayne Stuart for #TBT:

Lake County, Indiana fire departments were once home to several Snorkel ladder trucks over the years. Gary Fire Department had two Snorkel units in service at different times, with one coming from South Holland. The Griffith unit was originally from New Albany, Indiana, while the Mattoon ALF served in both St. John and Shelby, Indiana. Hammond Fire Department operated two Snorkel companies simultaneously—Snorkel 1 and Snorkel 2. Munster, though located in Lake County, falls under Mabas Division 24. The Crown Point rig was acquired from Snohomish County, Washington, where it was purchased as a demo model.

These photos capture some of the iconic aerial ladder trucks that once served in the region. Each unit has its own story, and Wayne Stuart’s collection offers a rare glimpse into the history of firefighting equipment in Lake County and beyond. It's always interesting to see how these machines have evolved over time, and how they've been used in different communities across the country.
