China's research and development success of new motor speed control system

In recent developments, a groundbreaking motor speed control system has emerged—switched reluctance motor technology. This innovative system is capable of achieving a power-saving rate of 5% or higher, even under conditions of frequent speed and load changes. Recently, it passed expert evaluation, marking a significant advancement in motor speed regulation in China. As one of the most energy-intensive devices, electric motors are now on the path to greater efficiency and energy conservation. The expert panel, including academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering such as Yao Fusheng and Professor Li Fahai from Tsinghua University, praised the system's "technological performance as reaching international advanced levels." They recommended further design optimization, cost reduction, and increased promotion efforts to help build a strong market presence for this technology. Electric motors are the largest consumers of electrical energy in China, with small and medium-sized motors alone accounting for over 60% of the country's total electricity consumption. Currently, variable frequency control remains the dominant method, but it comes with high energy costs. Since the 1980s, many research institutions in China have explored switched reluctance motor technology, yet progress has been slow. After more than three years of dedicated research and development by Shandong Kehui Electric Co., Ltd. and Shandong University of Technology, the switched reluctance motor speed control system has been successfully implemented at companies like Shandong Xinhua Pharmaceutical and Zibo Thermal Power. It has also passed comprehensive performance tests by the National Center for Quality Supervision of Small and Medium-Sized Motors and was included in the list of key energy-saving products recommended during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period by the National Development and Reform Commission. This breakthrough not only highlights technological progress but also opens up new opportunities for energy savings across various industries. With continued improvements and broader adoption, this system could play a crucial role in making industrial operations more sustainable and efficient.
