In recent discussions at the "2007 China Automotive Auto Brands Industry Chain Summit Forum" organized by *Car Watch* Magazine and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, industry leaders highlighted both the progress and challenges faced by China's auto sector. Dong Yang, executive vice president and secretary general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, emphasized that while local parts companies have made significant strides in independent innovation and international expansion, they still lag behind global competitors, particularly in mastering core automotive technologies and driving original innovation.
He stressed that achieving balanced growth between complete vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers is a critical challenge for all domestic brands. This requires not only technological advancement but also a stronger focus on collaboration across the entire supply chain.
Yan Fuwu, vice president of the Automotive Engineering Institute at Wuhan University of Technology, added that integrated innovation in the auto industry must be supported by a robust industrial chain. He urged Chinese automakers to prioritize original innovation and avoid redundant development. Additionally, he pointed out that many Chinese auto companies currently focus more on sales than on strengthening their supply chain. To ensure product quality, there needs to be a greater emphasis on supplier reliability and the implementation of strict quality control measures.
Yuan Wen, deputy general manager of Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., noted that one of the biggest challenges for Chinese auto parts companies entering the global market is the need for repeated development by suppliers. He explained that international carmakers often require suppliers to conduct multiple iterations of product development, which places high demands on Chinese manufacturers. To succeed globally, component makers must not only have strong production capabilities and good quality but also possess advanced R&D skills. Understanding the technology and development process of vehicle manufacturers is essential to remain competitive.
Han Zhiyu, deputy general manager of Changfeng Group, outlined four key requirements for vehicle companies when working with their supply chain partners: first, ensuring high-quality components; second, maintaining a strong reputation through reliable commitments; third, focusing on core technologies that offer high value and are often protected by competitors; and fourth, improving service quality and information transparency across the supply chain.
Wang Jingli, president of Zhongtai Holding Group, called for increased government support for the production of key core components, believing this would help OEMs and suppliers build stronger collaborative competitiveness.
As China's auto industry continues to grow, the need for a more integrated, innovative, and high-quality supply chain has never been more urgent.
