The Suzhou Electric Machining Machine Tool Research Institute, a subsidiary of SINOMACH, has recently initiated a research project focused on the development and industrialization of high-performance slow-wire electroforming machine tools. This initiative aims to elevate the technological standards of China’s CNC slow-wire cutting machines and provide advanced, critical equipment for the mold manufacturing industry.
Traditional fast-wire cutting machines have limited precision and are no longer sufficient to meet the evolving demands of modern mold production. In contrast, slow-wire cutting technology offers superior performance, with higher efficiency, greater precision, and improved surface quality. It can operate up to 2–3 times faster than fast-wire systems, achieving micron-level accuracy. The surface finish is also significantly better, meeting the stringent requirements of today's high-precision mold manufacturing. Currently, no other technology can match its capabilities.
Suzhou Electric Machining’s slow-wire project focuses on several key innovations, including narrow pulse width nanosecond large peak current (over 1000A) that enhances processing efficiency while minimizing resistance and electrolysis. It also features ultra-narrow pulse widths with extremely low surface roughness (in the tens of nanometers) for micro-finishing. The system incorporates a six-axis CNC platform, a four-axis CNC system with A-axis integration, linear servo motors, and precision immersion processing technology. The A-axis is seamlessly linked with the linear axis to expand machining capabilities. These advancements in linear servo motors and six-axis control systems represent significant breakthroughs.
In recent years, Suzhou Electric Machining has invested heavily in developing a new generation of slow-wire cutting machines, mastering all core technologies and securing full intellectual property rights. The technology has been reviewed and endorsed by internationally recognized experts, laying a solid foundation for further innovation and the development of even more advanced slow-wire cutting systems.
With growing demand for low-speed wire-cutting machines and rapid growth in the need for high-speed models, these machines are becoming essential in industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive, and IT. They play a crucial role in manufacturing complex materials and intricate shapes. However, only a handful of domestic manufacturers can produce cost-effective mid-range slow-wire machines, while high-end models remain largely imported. This project represents a major step forward in closing this technological gap.
