Emergency repair of gasoline pump failure of 10 kinds of phenomena

**1. Excessive Gap Between Internal and External Rocker Arms** (1) **Gasket Between Inner and Outer Rocker Arms** Use a gasket made of sheet metal, copper, iron wire, or semi-circular opening pins. During installation, ensure there is a proper gap between the inner and outer rocker arms and wrap the gasket securely to prevent it from falling out. (2) **Check the Thickness of the Gasket** Insert your hand into the fuel pump cylinder mounting hole, and manually rotate the engine's crankshaft slowly. When your hand feels the camshaft's surface moving toward the fuel pump drive cam tip (not the oil pump side), install the fuel pump (after placing the gas pump and liner between the cylinder). Tighten the fuel pump bolts slightly, then push the pump by hand to make it fit with the cylinder. Release it, and if suction occurs, the gasket is too thick. Adjust accordingly. **2. Broken Rocker Arm** If the rocker arm breaks, you can use one of the following methods: (1) Tie a wire or string to the fuel pump arm, and fix the other end inside the cabin. Control it manually, allowing the car to move only at low speed. (2) If a small pulley is available, tie the wire or string through the pulley and connect it to the accelerator pedal for foot control. (3) Remove the broken rocker arm and find a choke or throttle pull tube. Ensure the hole is well lubricated, fix one end of the tube to the hand pump handle, and the other end to the wiper lever. Use the wiper switch to move the lever back and forth, causing the pump to operate continuously. (4) For electric wipers, remove the wiper assembly and attach it to the top of the fuel pump. Fix both ends of the wire to the handle and the wiper lever. Connect a good power supply and use the wiper lever to move back and forth, helping the hand pump draw fuel. Choose the method that best fits your situation. **3. Fuel Pump Diaphragm Ruptured** (1) If the diaphragm has minor damage, such as edge damage, separate the damaged part and use the intact portion. (2) If the diaphragm has a long crack, cut a piece of plastic, tarp, or film to match the original shape and sandwich it between the original layers. (3) If fuel leaks into the crankcase due to a ruptured diaphragm, the engine oil becomes diluted. Replace it with new oil. If no new oil is available, drain the old oil, heat it, and evaporate the gasoline before using it temporarily. **4. Poor Sealing of Inlet and Outlet Valves** (1) If the bakelite valve is not flat, flip it for continued use or grind the uneven surface using abrasive paste on glass. After grinding, the valve can be reinstalled. (2) If the valves are sealed poorly due to gumming, clean them with alcohol, high-concentration white spirit, or acetone. (3) If the valve is ruptured, replace it with a thin piece of glass. Immerse the glass in water, then use pliers to slowly shape it into the valve’s form. **5. Cracked Oil Cup** (1) If the oil cup is only cracked, repair it using old plastic (like a toothbrush handle). Clean the cup thoroughly, heat the plastic over the exhaust pipe (avoid oil contamination), melt it, and press it into the crack. Let it cool and flatten it with the exhaust pipe for a stronger bond. (2) If the cup is completely broken, replace it with a substitute like a bottle, thermos cover, drink box, bamboo, cup, flashlight cap, or cream bottle. If the substitute is not tall enough, add a padding pad on the bottom and secure it with screws. To modify a bottle, wrap it with cotton thread, ignite the thread, and quickly submerge it in cold water. The bottle will collapse and break at the thread. If the oil cup has a middle partition, cut a soft board to match the size and place it where the original partition was. **6. Worn External Rocker Arm and Cam** If the external rocker arm and cam are excessively worn, reducing the fuel pump clearance, you can thin or even remove the cylinder liner (but ensure no oil leakage occurs). **7. Broken Pump Spring** If the pump spring is broken, use a spring from the steering wheel horn button or another similar spring as a replacement. **8. Fuel Leaks** (1) If the liner loses its sealing ability due to stiffness, soak it in hot water to soften it, then apply grease for reuse. (2) If the above method doesn’t work or the liner is ruptured, cut a piece of yellow paper or asbestos board to match the original size. **9. Gas Pump "Vapor Lock"** To eliminate vapor lock: (1) Turn off the engine and open the hood for ventilation. (2) Rinse the tubing with cold water to help cool it (avoid getting water on the intake, exhaust, or fuel pump cup). (3) Wrap a cloth soaked in cold water around the fuel pump for cooling. After some time, remove the carburetor and manually pump the fuel several times (without sending it into the engine). (4) If the temperature is too high and vapor lock is frequent, place a water-soaked sandbag over the pump to block heat from the exhaust pipe. Keep the sandbags wet for better insulation. **10. Damaged Fuel Pump** If the pump is damaged and not working, replace it with a container filled with gasoline, installed above the carburetor. Connect the tubing to the carburetor to create a self-flow fuel system. Be cautious of fire hazards when using this method.
