Recently, the domestic price of calcium carbide has remained relatively low, adding to the challenges faced by producers. At the same time, the sluggish demand in the PVC market and the ongoing decline in PVC prices have intensified pressure on the calcium carbide sector. This downward trend is particularly concerning as it affects the overall profitability and stability of the industry.
In October, China's PVC production reached 602,000 tons, marking a year-on-year increase of 40.5%. From January to October, total PVC output amounted to 5.3 million tons, up 27.8% compared to the same period last year. This surge in production has created a more difficult sales environment for PVC manufacturers. Meanwhile, calcium carbide output during the same period increased by nearly 30%, outpacing the growth rate of PVC.
On the import front, PVC imports slowed significantly. From January to October, China imported 1.34 million tons of PVC, a decrease of 21.4% year-on-year. Meanwhile, exports rose sharply to 56,000 tons, an increase of 244.2%. However, given the small volume of exports, their impact on alleviating domestic supply pressures has been minimal. Additionally, export prices for PVC have dropped significantly. In October, the export price fell to $918.4 per ton, down 36% from the previous year. The weak demand in the PVC market is the key factor behind the continued struggles in the calcium carbide market.
The international trade of calcium carbide remains limited, and logistical challenges—such as shipping constraints—further hinder export efforts. As a result, many companies are struggling to find buyers abroad. Currently, most calcium carbide producers are pessimistic about future market conditions. Most of the northern calcium carbide is flowing into Central, East, South, and Southwest China. With the approaching Spring Festival at year-end, the outlook for the calcium carbide market remains bleak.
As of now, the mainstream domestic prices for calcium carbide vary by region: 2,100 yuan in North China, 1,800–1,900 yuan in Inner Mongolia, 1,900 yuan in the Northwest, 2,300 yuan in the Northeast, 2,100 yuan in Central China, 2,450 yuan in the South, 2,500 yuan in the East, and 2,350 yuan in the Southwest. These regional differences reflect varying levels of supply and demand across the country.
